Light Game Wrasse Lures

Lee Goddard takes a rundown of the best HTO lures for targeting wrasse on light game tackle.

Since the very first day I started Rockfishing Wrasse have had a special appeal to me, I really buzz off of the simplicity of light Wrasse fishing. From scrambling around on rocks looking for broken ground with deep kelp bedded holes, to jigging over precarious rocky over hangs are all part of the enormous fun that light Wrassing is.

I buzz off of the way you and your kit become totally in tune as you tap the rock and kelp strewn sea bed with a simple Texas rig and using the refinements of your tackle to read the ocean floor. Often in serene, peaceful surroundings, yet excitedly awaiting an aggressive Ballan to bite your lure, before tearing off and trying to wedge himself back into a nest or hole. It really is pure fun and guaranteed to put a smile on your face! If this kind of fishing is for you, please read on.

Over the last few years I have genuinely found it difficult to find the right lures for  light game Wrassing, with a specific quality for light game texas rigging. I have quite a few lures that lend themselves to jig head application, but I have found very few that really lend themselves to a weedless presentation, that is until I joined the HTO team!

Upon receiving my HTO starter pack I was delighted to find the HTO Mini Sticks and Mini Shads inside, I'd never seen them before and the material felt just so good and is off just the right quality to allow a weedless hook to pop out and hook a fish. The profile too just lends itself so well to this style and right away they screamed “Texas to me”!

The colours too are just perfect for Wrasse fishing, I often like greens, browns and blues for Wrasse, with an Ayu colour being a firm favourite. Had I finally found a “to go lure” for my light game texas rig?

OH YES! From my very first cast with these lures, I was as hooked as the fish!

These lures just look great in the water, they have a sweet shimmer as they fall through the water column, when they are twitched or just moving with the water and boy do they trigger the fish to bite!

The HTO Mini Sticks and Mini Shads have truly earned themselves a firm place in my box of tricks and trust me, Wrasse aren't the only species to like them!
